Opal #801 - Heartworm Positive

foster to adopt pending

Support Opal via our HHH Program

  • Opal is a senior lady who is heartworm positive, still intact, underweight, badly needs her teeth cleaned, is arthritic, and has a cataract in one eye. Thankfully, her bloodwork is good, her heart and lungs sound good, and she’s not done living her life. She is a feisty old gal that enjoys tootling around the house and yard, taking long naps on each and every dog bed in the house, and finding our which sweaters look the best on her (spoiler alert: it’s all of them).

She is dog friendly and very patient with even the youngest, goofiest dogs, but we have found that she and cats are like oil and water. She is snappy with cats when they come up to sniff her face and patrols the house looking for them, concerned about their intentions. She is housetrained but does need to go out every few hours. She enjoys snuggling on the couch with her humans while begging for snacks, sitting at their feet while they work, and cozying up to them in bed at night. She is incredibly easy to have around, never makes a peep, and is very low maintenance other than her pill regimen.

Unfortunately, Opal has tested positive for heartworm. She is looking for a foster to adopt home that will allow her to live with them while MNBR covers the cost of her heartworm treatment, then adopt her once she is heartworm free. MNBR has clinics in MN, IA, WI, and ND that adopters can use for treatment.

Bailey #819

Age: 5 years old

Color & Breed: Red/White Basset

Gender: Neutered Male

Weight: 51 pounds

Highlights: Bailey would likely do best as an only dog and without cats due to his fear of other animals. He is GREAT with kids.

Click here to apply for Bailey

  • Bailey #819 was dealt a short hand when he was fallen on by a climbing toddler. In surprise, he reacted, which resulted in his being surrendered. MNBR believes in second chances and Bailey’s proven that he deserves one.

At five years old, Bailey knows the drill. He’s housetrained, crate trained, walks on a leash, and is a stair pro. He doesn’t like getting caught in the rain but perhaps could be bribed if snuggling and pina coladas were involved. He isn’t a huge fan of car rides, but that just means he’ll be even happier to see you when you get home.

Bailey knows not all kids are clumsy, and he’s enjoyed sitting with older (7+) children. He’s also very playful. His favorite game is tag with humans—and he’s “it”! He’s a fraidy cat when it comes to, well, cats, and overly friendly dogs, but he has shown that he can hang with some chill older female bassets, so hope is not lost! Show Bailey you believe in him by putting in an application!

Rae #822 adoption pending

Age: 9 years young

Color & Breed: Red/White Basset

Gender: Spayed Female

Weight: 47 pounds

  • Rae is 9 years young and came to MNBR when her owner, and then her bonded friend Roddie, both passed away. This lovely 47 pound senior lady is looking for a loving home to spend her golden years. She is people, cat, and dog friendly and is not opposed to a good chase and a game of wrestle with some younger pups. She is housetrained and leash trained and loves a good snuggle.

We will update her bio as we learn more about her.

Walter #830

foster to adopt pending

heartworm positive

  • Have you been waiting for a kid-friendly basset? Walter #830 loves them like a basset straight of a Disney movie. He also lives with a male basset and a female retriever and has been respectful of their personal space. He’s friendly and has even taken cross-state road trips with brand-new basset friends.

Walter would enjoy a fenced-in backyard but is a total gentleman on a leash. He does NOT enjoy a crate and will let everyone in the surrounding area know about it. (He’s otherwise very quiet and well behaved!) His foster family thinks he’d love an active family with another dog, or just people who are around a lot.

Walter loves being outside, sleeping in bed with people, and enjoying an occasional zoomie. Sometimes he chews on things he’s not supposed to, but he easily gives them up or trades for something better. And just look at his face!! How could you not fill out an application?

Unfortunately, Walter has tested positive for heartworm. He is looking for a foster to adopt home that will allow him to live with them while MNBR covers the cost of his heartworm treatment, then adopt him once he is heartworm free. MNBR has clinics in MN, IA, WI, and ND that adopters can use for treatment.

Gidget #832 adoption pending

Age: 1.5 years old

Color & Breed: Tricolor Beagle

Gender: Spayed Female

Weight: 27 pounds

  • Gidget #832 is about the cutest little beagle you could ever set your eyes upon. She’s 1 ½ years old and says that every one of her 27 pounds is adorable. (“Beagle princess” has been used to describe her.)

A transplant from El Paso, Gidget is all about trying new things, like leashes and crates. (And she looks SO cute in a harness.) She’s working up to crates. And speaking of trying, she wishes a squirrel would, because she is fast and has a prey drive that only a fenced-in yard could contain.

Some princesses dance at balls. Gidget dances for food! She twirls and spins when she’s excited. She’s great with other dogs, has been exposed to little kids, and could even be an only dog, because she doesn’t mind being alone (and that means more attention on just her.)

Gertrude (Gerdy) #833

Age: 5.5 years old

Color & Breed: Red/White Beagle Mix

Gender: Spayed Female

Weight: 43 pounds

Click here to apply for Gerdy

  • Gertrude #833 (aka Gertrude when she’s feeling official) is a 5.5-year-old spayed red and white beagle mix. She was a stray in Texas and came up here to enjoy the Land of 10,000 Lakes. (And she loves a good walk, so get your walking shoes broken in now!)

Gerdy’s got the beagle look but a basset bark! She’s also got basset-level cuddling skills. She’s crated while her family is gone, walks on a leash, and is housetrained. Due to her past as a stray, her fosters would prefer she goes to a place with a fenced-in yard, since we don’t know how she got loose the first time.

Gerdy does great with other dogs but doesn’t mind being alone. She’s more comfortable with women than men, but can easily be bribed by treats. Gerty’s ready to hit the trail (or hit the couch for a long nap.) Grab your leash or your favorite blanket and make it happen!

Allesandro #834

Age: 6 years old

Color & Breed: Tricolor Basset

Gender: Neutered Male

Weight: 38 pounds

Click here to apply for Allesandro

  • Allessandro #834 is a tricolor basset who’s a tidy 38 pounds. He had a midlife crisis and came here from El Paso (that wandering soul can hit if you’re 6 or 60!) with the hope of finding a forever family.

Allessandro’s favorite hobby is saying hi (or “hola!” if you’re bilingual) to every dog and person to cross his path. He’d be okay as an only dog, but he’s so friendly that another dog would really enjoy his company! His interests include snagging his foster sister’s favorite bed, chasing bunnies, dog parks, people, and new groceries. Dislikes include baths, long car rides, vacuums, and, for some reason, the backyard. (Maybe his foster family has a resident Bigfoot?)

This guy is housetrained and is allowed free access to the house when his humans are away. He’d be fine in most any kind of family situation, and he wanted everyone to know that he loves duets, so if you’re a fan of sing-alongs, he’s happy to be your backup.

Allesandro has been diagnosed with bilateral corneal edema. This condition is not currently painful for him and does not require surgery at this time. He is taking anti-inflammatory drops to ensure his long-term comfort. He may develop ulcers 3-4 years in the future that would require a different type of drop or surgery.

Maisie #837 heartworm positive

Age: 8 years old

Color & Breed: Red/White Basset

Gender: Spayed Female

Weight: 49 pounds

Click here to apply for Maisie

  • We were contacted to assist with five dogs from a single home that had unfortunately been neglected by their caretakers. Maisie is 8 years old and the smallest of the group at 49 pounds. She had previously been bred but hasn’t had any litters in recent years. She is shyer than the other ladies, but is settling in well. We are told she is kid, cat, and dog friendly. She will need to be vaccinated, run bloodwork, be spayed, and likely get a dental. She also has an unusual growth on one of her mammaries that will likely need to be removed. We expect her vetting costs to be substantial, but we are so happy that we can help her.

Unfortunately, Maisie has tested positive for heartworm. She is looking for a foster to adopt home that will allow her to live with them while MNBR covers the cost of her heartworm treatment, then adopt her once she is heartworm free. MNBR has clinics in MN, IA, WI, and ND that adopters can use for treatment.

Hemi #838

Age: 7 years old

Color & Breed: Red/White Basset

Gender: Intact Female - Spay Pending 5/28

Weight: 67 pounds

Click here to apply for Hemi

  • We were contacted to assist with five dogs from a single home that had unfortunately been neglected by their caretakers. Hemi is 7 years old and the largest of the group at 67 pounds. She has previously been bred but hasn’t had any litters in recent years. We are told she is kid, cat, and dog friendly and she has been affectionate with her foster family.

On 5/14 Hemi had a full work up at our vet. Her bloodwork looked good considering her previous flea infestation and she is 4DX negative. Her spay has been delayed until her skin infections can be cleared. She received a cytopoint injection and was started on oral antibiotics. Unfortunately, due to what we believe was chewing on bars, Hemi needed 18 teeth removed. The unusual growth on her hip was also removed. Her initial vet appointment totaled $1,300 but we are so happy that we can help her.

We will update her bio as we learn more about her.

Mini #839

Age: 7 years old

Color & Breed: Tricolor Basset

Gender: Intact Female - Spay Pending

Weight: 65 pounds

Click here to apply for Mini

  • We were contacted to assist with five dogs from a single home that had unfortunately been neglected by their caretakers. Mini is 7 years old and a beefy 65 pounds. She had previously been bred but hasn’t had any litters in recent years. Willow and Phoebe are her daughters. We are told she is kid, cat, and dog friendly and she is the sweetest of the bunch.

On 5/14 Mini had a full work up at our vet. Her bloodwork looked good considering her previous flea infestation and she is 4DX negative. Her spay has been delayed until her skin infections can be cleared. She was started on prednisone and oral antibiotics. Unfortunately, due to what we believe was chewing on bars, Mini’s teeth are in very poor condition. Her lower two canines are broken at the root so our vet is recommending she see a dental specialist. We expect her vetting costs to be substantial but we are so happy that we can help her.

We will update her bio as we learn more about her.

Willow #840

On 5/14 Willow had a full work up at our vet. Her bloodwork looked good considering her previous flea infestation and she is 4DX negative. Her spay has been delayed until her skin infections can be cleared. She received a cytopoint injection and was started on oral antibiotics. Thankfully, Willow only needed 2 teeth removed. Her initial vet appointment totaled $990 but we are so happy that we can help her.

We will update her bio as we learn more about her.

Hudson Coming Soon delayed

Age: 2.5 years old

Color & Breed: Tricolor Basset

Gender: Intact Male - Neuter pending

Weight: 33 pounds

  • Hudson joined MNBR as a transfer from a shelter in El Paso, TX where he was taken in as a stray. While initially, he did very well in his foster home in Oklahoma, he was hospitalized for four days in mid April for lack of appetite and vomiting. After he was released, he was readmitted about five days later for similar symptoms in addition to fluid in his lungs, discharge from his eyes and nose, and bleeding gums. After another six days of hospitalization he was again released, several pounds lighter, with no clear answer as to the cause of his illness.

Through it all, he is a sweet, happy boy that loves to “talk.”

We will update his bio as we learn more about him.
